HC Deb 02 August 1976 vol 916 c512W
Mr. Litterick

asked the Prime Minister what qualifications he considers to be necessary in those individuals he recommends for appointment as directors of the Bank of England; and how many of the present directors of the Bank of England have had training in economics up to first degree standard.

The Prime Minister

The Court of Directors of the Bank ought between them to have both a theoretical and practical understanding and experience of banking, economics and financial matters and a wide range of experience of different walks of life and sectors of the economy. In recommending individuals for appointment to the court I bear those needs in mind. I do not regard a first degree in economics as a necessary qualification, but in fact six members of the present court have such degrees.
