HC Deb 14 April 1976 vol 909 cc562-3W
Mr. Frank R. White

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what major industrial conurbations within the United Kingdom possess rapid transit passenger systems; what the cost of these projects was; what the limit of national funds involved in such capital works was; in what years they became operational; and what the costs of these systems would be at 1976 prices.

Mr. Marks

All the metropolitan counties in England, Greater London and Greater Glasgow have, for many years, had local rail passenger services to city centres. London and Glasgow also have underground rail systems. Information on the original cost of these is not readily available.

Major improvements to existing urban rail systems are currently under construction in London, Glasgow and Merseyside. A new metro system is also under construction on Tyneside. Information about the original cost and rate of Government grant relating to such projects in England was included in the reply given to the hon. Member for Eastbourne (Mr. Gort) on 5th November 1975—[Vol. 899, c. 226.]

Original Scheme Cost (at prices at the tint) on which grant was approved £ million Rate of Grant Per cent. Year in which grant approved
Reconstruction of Glassow Central Low Level Line 15.1 75 1974
Modernisation of Glasgow Underground 11.7 75 1974

The information is not readily available to convert all costs to a current price base.
