HC Deb 05 April 1976 vol 909 cc50-1W
Mr. Rippon

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action he is taking to safeguard the interests of British nationals whose property has suffered damage as a result of events in Cyprus or whose money is frozen in Cyprus bank accounts.

Mr. Hattersley

As a result of persistent representations to the Governments and authorities concerned there have recently been some useful responses on the question of compensation for damage to British property. Mr. Denktash's statement that a Claims Commission is to be established is particularly encouraging and we shall keep a close watch on developments to ensure proper redress for our nationals.

Bank accounts of United Kingdom nationals in Cyprus have not been frozen. Those who have accounts in the Turkish area should consult the appropriate bank's head office in Cyprus which may be able to assist with the release of funds, subject to Cyprus exchange control regulations.
