Lord BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the total of Savings Certificates outstanding and by how much the value of sterling has declined since 1st January 1974.

Lord JACQUES

As shown in Table 26 of Financial Statistics for September 1975, the estimated total of outstanding principal of all issues of National Savings Certificates is £2,049.5 million. Taking the internal purchasing power of the pound as 100p in January 1974, its value in September 1975, the latest date available, is estimated to be 71p. This estimate is based on the change in the General Index of Retail Prices.

House adjourned at eleven minutes before nine o'clock.
