asked the Attorney-General how many civil proceedings alleging assault against members of the security forces in Northern Ireland have been instituted since 9th August 1971 and with what results; how much money has been paid out in compensation; how many of such proceedings were settled out of court; and how many went to trial and with what results.

798 actions were commenced between 9th August 1971 and 30th September 1975. Of these, 11 cases went to trial, nine were dismissed and judgment was given for the claimant in two. 220 cases were settled out of Court. 567 cases are still outstanding. In the 222 cases disposed of £420,823.48 has been paid in compensation. These do not include cases settled or outstanding where no proceedings have been commenced.
