HC Deb 21 October 1975 vol 898 cc100-1W
26. Mr. Gourlay

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many employees have become redundant at the GEC factory in Kirkcaldy since 1st August 1975; how many further redundancies have been notified to his Department or are anticipated; and what prospects of employment will be available to those affected.

Mr. John Fraser

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that redundancies affecting 82 women have taken place at the GEC factory in Kirkcaldy since 1st August 1975. Redeployment prospects for those affected are poor, as there is little local demand, particularly for female part-time workers.

A further 289 redundancies have been notified as due to occur in the remainder of 1975 or later. Until more is known about the occupations and types of work being sought by those who may be affected, it is difficult to assess their prospects of redeployment. However, in present circumstances, it is anticipated that some difficulty may be experienced.

27. Mr. Park

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many employees have become redundant at the GEC factories in Coventry since 1st August 1975; how many further redundancies have been notified to his Department or are anticipated; and what prospects of employment will be available to those affected.

Mr. John Fraser

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that redundancies affecting 39 people have taken place at GEC Coventry since 1st August 1975.

As older workers were mainly affected prospects of finding alternative employment are poor.

The numbers likely to be involved in further redundancies are not yet known, although it is understood that up to 1,100 people may be affected.

Until more is known about the occupations and types of work being sought by those who may be affected, it is difficult to assess their prospects of redeployment. However, in present circumstances, it is likely that some difficulty may be experienced.
