HC Deb 28 November 1975 vol 901 cc338-9W
Mr. Lamborn

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will indicate the extent of the damage to roads in Northern Ireland caused by bonfires in July and August 1975, and the total costs involved in repairing the damage, the general clearing up of the areas and the attendance of emergency services.

Mr. Concannon

Some 203 areas of roadway were damaged as a result of bonfires during July and August. The cost of repair is estimated at £85,000. The cost of clearing up amounted to some £4,600. The lire authority answered 167 bonfire calls at a cost of £5,000. I am unable to give costs of police involvement. The total cost, therefore, is likely to exceed £100,000.

Mr. Lamborn

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what steps are being taken to repair the damage to roads in Northern Ireland resulting from bonfires during July and August 1975.

Mr. Concannon

Work on repairing the worst areas of roadway damaged by bonfires is at present being carried out to meet the statutory requirements of the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. Repairs to the other damaged areas of roadway will be undertaken under a gradual programme.
