HC Deb 26 November 1975 vol 901 c200W
14. Mr. Hastings

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will list and value British farms and other properties which has been expropriated by the Lisbon Government; and what action he pro poses to take to ensure adequate and early compensation.

Mr. Hattersley

We know of two cases where the Portuguese Government have intervened in the running of companies with British shareholders. In addition, six farms owned or rented by United Kingdom nationals and four other British businesses have been taken over by groups of workers.

In all cases where those involved have asked us to do so, strong and repeated representations have been made to the Portuguese Government for proper treatment. We shall continue to press for this.
