HC Deb 26 November 1975 vol 901 cc163-4W
Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is the current number of civil servants in his Department; and what was the total number in the equivalent sections of Departments in 1964 and the percentage increase or decrease of the total between the two dates.

Mr. John Smith

The number of civil servants in my Department is currently 1,402 compared with approximately 940 in broadly equivalent sections of Departments in 1964. This represents an increase of approximately 49 per cent., mainly attributable to North Sea developments.
