HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 cc831-2W
Dr. Reginald Bennett

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what actions have been taken so far in 1975 in pursuance of anti-rabies measures notably in ports between Portland Bill and Selsey Bill.

Mr. Strang

The measures to prevent the introducing of rabies into Great Britain, and to control outbreaks should they occur, are set out in the Rabies (Importation of Dogs, Cats and Other Mammals) Order 1974 and the Rabies (Control) Order 1974, both of which came into operation on 5th February 1975. The action taken to implement these measures varies from place to place to suit local circumstances.

Her Majestys Customs are our first line of defence in preventing the importation of the disease by means of illegally imported animals; and the duties of diseases of animals inspectors, employed by local authorities, include the enforcement of the regulations.

amended by SI 1974/1) importation of living plants of the important coniferous forest tree species is prohibited.
