HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 c785W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what proportion of mail is currently sorted by automatic code sorting equipment; and how much of this is delivered within 12 hours of posting.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

This is a matter for the day-to-day management of the Post Office and I shall draw the hon. Member's Question to the attention of the Chairman of the Post Office.

Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is the planned investment in automatic code sorting equipment by the Post Office in each of the next three years; and how many sorters will be made redundant as a result.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

The Post Office tells me that its planned investment in code sorting equipment (at current prices) is: £4 million in 1976–77; £5 million in 1977–78; and £5 million in 1978–79.

Consequential reductions in staff are expected to be covered by normal wastage.
