HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 cc742-3W
Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on his policy towards football vandalism in Scotland.

Mr. William Ross

I have expressed concern many times about the behaviour of spectators at certain sporting occasions. The courts, the police, social workers, teachers and parents all have a part to play in providing a remedy. If the hon. Member has in mind damage to property, I deplore that, too, whether or not it is associated with football crowds. Police strength in Scotland is now higher than it has ever been, but the greatest contribution to reducing this mischief would be a stronger sense of community responsibility, and that it is my object to encourage.
