Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will consider advising vehicle owners whose vehicles are now listed on the centralised estimated expenditure on trunk roads for that period was £140,228. The estimated expenditure on trunk roads in 1975–76 is £308,000. Since 1st April 1975 principal roads like other roads, have been the responsibility of the local highway authorities.

Mr. Cryer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment under what statutory authority he holds public inquiries into road proposals.

Section 279 and the First Schedule to the Highways Act 1959 and Section 5 and the First Schedule to the Acquisition of Land (Authorisation Procedure) Act 1946.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many miles of new roads, motorways and expressways, have been constructed since 1964; and what has been the cost, capital and interest, in each year since 1964 of constructing and repairing all the roads, motorways and expressways in the United Kingdom.

Following is the available information: Total road mileage in the United Kingdom increased by 13,440 miles between 1964 and 1974, of which 930 miles were additional motorway.
