HC Deb 11 November 1975 vol 899 c562W
22. Mr. Sims

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received in respect of his proposals to close certain teacher training colleges; and what amendments he intends to make in the light of them.

Mr. Mulley

Almost every proposal that a college of education should cease initial training has met with objections. Such objections were carefully considered before final decisions were taken, and accordingly I have no plans to make amendments.

41. Mr. Hatton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many places are at present available in teacher training colleges; and what is the percentage reduction planned by 1981.

Mr. Mulley

The number of teacher training places is being reduced by some 46 per cent. from about 114,000 to about 60,000 by 1981.
