HC Deb 11 November 1975 vol 899 cc558-60W
16. Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his policy on student representation on the governing bodies of colleges of education and polytechnics.

Mr. Mulley

I welcome the participation of students on governing bodies. When considering new instruments and articles of government I expect to see appropriate student representation.

40. Mr. John H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will set out a table in the Official Report showing the number of students and undergraduates in each of the main faculties, respectively, and in total in British universities, expressing these numbers as a percentage of the total number of university students, and, comparing the position with 1970 and 1965, whilst indicating his latest estimate of future trends.

Mr. Mulley

The following table shows for undergraduates and for all students, undergraduates and postgraduates, the numbers and percentages on full-time and sandwich courses in each of the main subject groups in British universities. 1973–74 is the latest year for which full information is available; for all subjects the 1974–75 totals are provisionally estimated at 251,000 students, of whom 204,000 were undergraduates. For future trends I would refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave to the hon. Member for the Isle of Ely (Mr. Freud) on 20th October 1975.—[Vol. 898, c.73].
