HC Deb 11 November 1975 vol 899 c601W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has had concerning the failure of the salmon fishery on the west coast in the current year; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. William Ross

Several representations have been received claiming that alleged high seas fishing for salmon this summer by foreign vessels off Lewis and Cape Wrath had a detrimental effect on salmon stocks returning to rivers in those parts. The allegations regarding foreign vessels were investigated. No evidence at all was found to suggest that these vessels, which were legitimately engaged in the mackerel fishery, were fishing for salmon.
