Mr. Norman Lamont

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many chauffeur-driven cars are used in the Treasury, the Department of Industry, the Department of Trade, the Department of Health and Social Security, the Ministry of Defence, the Home Office, the Department of Prices, the Department of Energy, the Foreign Office, the Scottish Office and the Welsh Office, respectively.

The numbers or chauffeur-driven cars provided by the Government Car Service are as follows:

Treasury 6
Department of Industry 6
Department of Trade 8
Department of Health and Social Security 8
Ministry of Defence None
Home Office 3
Department of Prices 3
Department of Energy 4
Foreign Office 5
Scottish Office 4
Welsh Office 3

In addition, the Metropolitan Police provides a car for the Home Secretary and the Ministry of Defence five of its cars for its Ministers.
