HC Deb 10 November 1975 vol 899 cc511-3W
Mr. Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the total revenue for each year since the introduction of the system from the collection of parking fines for the whole of Yorkshire and the administrative costs, including the employment of parking wardens, for the corresponding periods.

Dr. Summerskill

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to the fixed penalty system.

The following table shows the amounts paid in respect of fixed penalty notices issued by police forces in Yorkshire:

£
1963 2,832
1964 5,896
1965 33,774
1966 48,086
1967 65,816
1968 77,526
1969 78,638
1970 90,264
1971 129,470
1972 183,472
1973 254,222

It is not possible to say how many of the notices related to alleged parking offences. No comparable figure for 1974 is available because of the reorganisation of local government and police force districts. The costs of operating the fixed penalty system against parking offenders cannot be separately identified.

Mr. Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total number of parking fines issued and the number paid, in the whole of Yorkshire, for the period of the last year for which figures are available.

Dr. Summerskill

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to fixed penalty notices.

In 1973 police forces in Yorkshire issued 94,704 notices for alleged parking offences. It is not known how many of these fixed penalties were paid, but out of the total of 154,042 notices issued—including those for alleged parking offences—the fixed penalty was paid in 127,111 cases.

Comparable figures for 1974 are not available because of the reorganisation of local government and police force districts.
