HC Deb 10 November 1975 vol 899 cc518-9W
Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will issue a circular advising police chief constables to write into contracts of employment that any officer or policeman injured in the course of his duty, especially when trying to apprehend criminals, should be offered as of right some alternative employment within the civilian branch should he wish to do so and be fit enough to carry out the duties involved.

Dr. Summerskill

The conditions of service of police officers are prescribed in regulations made by my right hon. Friend. The appointment of police civilian staff is a local matter, but we are satisfied that a case of the kind envisaged would be handled sympathetically.
