HC Deb 10 November 1975 vol 899 c518W
Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many Members of Parliament are currently returned from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, respectively; what is the average number of electors per Member of Parliament in each of the four countries of the United Kingdom; and what changes would have to be made in this representation in order to provide that on average each Member of Parliament represented the same number of electors in each country, assuming no increase in the total size of the House of Commons.

Dr. Summerskill

The information is as follows:

each of the last three years; and what is the average length of stay of prison officers seconded to Northern Ireland.

Dr. Summerskill

The numbers sent on detached duty from the prison service in England and Wales during the 12 months ending 31st October 1973, 1974 and 1975 were, respectively, 377, 490 and 494. I regret that a precise figure for the average length of stay is not readily available but it is estimated to be about six months.
