asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how many applications for bus fare increases were made to the Traffic Com- missioners in the Yorkshire and North Western traffic areas, respectively, during the last 12 months for which figures are available; how many of these applications were altered or amended by the commissioners; how many applications were rejected; how many applications were approved without alteration; and what average percentage fare increase the total number of approved applications represents in their respective areas;

(2) how many applications for bus fare increases were made to the Traffic Commissioners throughout England and Wales during the last 12 months for which figures are available; how many of these applications were altered or amended by the Commissioners; how many applications were rejected; how many applications were approved without alteration; and what average national percentage fare increase the total number of approved applications represented.

Traffic Commissioners are statutorily independent bodies and this information is not readily available within my Department. I have asked the Commissioners for details and will write to the hon. Member.
