HC Deb 04 November 1975 vol 899 cc110-1W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many members of the public have been killed through (a) an accident in a quarry currently being worked, and (b) through an accident in a disused quarry, during each of the past five years in England and Wales.

Mr. Harold Walker

I am advised by the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that he has no record of a member of the public having been killed during the last five years through an accident at a quarry currently being worked; I understand from my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment that his Department does not maintain records of fatal accidents to members of the public at disused quarries.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many workmen have been fatally injured in a quarry currently being worked in each of the last five years.

Mr. Harold Walker

I am informed by the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that, excluding fatalities at opencast coal workings, the number of persons killed in quarries which according to available information are still being worked were:

1970 19
1971 8
1972 14
1973 12
1974 12

There have been 14 fatalities in 1975.
