asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many workmen have been fatally injured in opencast coal mine workings operated by the National Coal Board or by contractors on behalf of the Board in each of the past five years.

I am informed by the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that the numbers of persons killed were:

1970 2
1971 2
1972 1
1973 2
1974 4

There has been one fatality in 1975.
