Mr. Bates

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total education expenditure in the last full year for which figures are available; what percentage this is of gross national product; and if he will break this down into spending on nursery, primary, secondary, higher education, or some other such division as may be convenient, including the amount spent on administration.

Mr. Mulley

In the financial year 1974–75 total educational expenditure in the United Kingdom amounted to £5,884 million which represented 7.5 per cent. of the GNP. An estimated breakdown of the expenditure is as follows:
