HC Deb 05 May 1975 vol 891 cc359-60W
Mr. Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many persons on the waiting list for admission to a geriatric bed are now residing in local authority residential accommodation in the area covered by the Congleton and Macclesfield group of hospitals;

(2) how many persons are waiting for geriatric beds in the area covered by the Macclesfield and Congleton groups of hospitals.

Dr. Owen

Eight persons are waiting for admission to geriatric hospital beds, of whom none are known to be in local authority residential accommodation.

Mr. Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average weekly cost of keeping a geriatric patient in West Heath Hospital, Congleton, Parkside Hospital, Macclesfield, Moss Lane Hospital, Macclesfield, West Park Hospital, Macclesfield, and Collar House, Prestbury, Macclesfield, respectively.

Dr. Owen

Separate costs are not available for specialities but in the year ending 31st March 1974 the average weekly in-patient cost for each hospital of which only West Heath caters specifically for geriatric patients was as follows:

£
West Heath 50.93
Parkside 36.84
Moss Lane 53.49
West Park 112.37
Collar House 47.74

Mr. Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the average waiting period for persons requiring geriatric beds in the area covered by the Macclesfield and Congleton group of hospitals.

Dr. Owen

Averages are misleading as waiting times for admission vary according to the circumstances of individual cases, but on average patients admitted during April had waited eight days.

Mr. Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many geriatric beds are available within the area covered by the Macclesfield and Congleton group of hospitals; and how this compares with the average for the North-West and the national average, respectively.

Dr. Owen

Average numbers during 1973 were:

Beds Beds per 1,000 population over 65
Macclesfield 225 9.8
North Western and Mersey Regions 8,095 9.1
England 56,184 8.8
