asked the Secretary of State for Industry when, and at what expense, he expects the National Giro to install new computers.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie:

The computers used by Giro at Bootle form part of the Post Office's network of computers. The Post Office tells me that it is not planning to replace them before 1980–81. The cost of providing equivalent computer capacity for Giro at that time is estimated by the Post Office at £1.5 million.
