Mr. Cyril Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will publish in the Official Report the total number of deaths attributable to hypothermia in each winter period for the years 1965 to 1974.

Deaths attributed solely or mainly to hypothermia in England and Wales during the six month periods from October to March were as follows:

1966–67 8
1967–68 6
1968–70 *
1970–71 16
1971–72 18
1972–73 10
1973–74 22

Deaths in eighteen month period from October 1968 to March 1970 totalled 48.
