HC Deb 07 March 1975 vol 887 cc536-7W
Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he proposes to take action to restrict new methods of coastal netting of salmon.

Mr. William Ross

In view of the growing threat to the conservation of salmon stocks presented by the increase in the use of methods of catching salmon at sea which are not covered by the existing restrictions on drift netting, my right hon. Friends and I propose to make an order which will prohibit the use in Scottish waters and off the mouth of the Tweed of any gill net set or fished from a boat, whether attached to the shore or sea bed or not.
