Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many women are known to have died within one month of operations for termination of pregnancy notified under the Abortion Regulations in the years 1972, 1973 and 1974, respectively; and what was the cause of death recorded on the death certificate.

Dr. Owen

Fifteen in 1972, six in 1973 and six in 1974. Of these 27 deaths, 19 were attributed to abortion, two to ischaemic heart disease, two to venous thrombosis, and one each to eclampsia, volvulus, benign neoplasm of colon and adverse effect of anaesthetic gas.
