Mr. Booth

Information is available from the New Earnings Survey relating to April 1974. Estimates of average weekly earnings, of average hourly earnings, excluding the effects of overtime, of the distribution of weekly earnings and of the distribution of hourly earnings in Wales, in each of the regions of England and in Great Britain were published in tables 108 and 115 of New Earnings Survey 1974, Part E. Tables 108 to 113 also include estimates of average weekly earnings and of average hourly earnings excluding the effects of overtime in each Welsh county where sample sizes were large enough to give reliable estimates. They do not include comprehensive estimates of the distribution of earnings in Welsh counties.

The following table gives estimates of the distribution of weekly earnings and of hourly earnings in April 1974 of full-time men aged 21 and over and women aged 18 and over who were employed in counties in Wales where sample sizes were large enough to give reliable estimates and whose pay for the survey reference period was not affected by absence.

Mr. Knox

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, taking the first quarter of 1945 as 100, what would be the index number for (a) the value of average earnings and (b) basic rates of wages in each quarter from 1945 to the latest quarter for which information is available.

Mr. Booth

Comparable figures of earnings and wage rates, relating to manual workers in the industries and services covered by the Department's present October inquiry into earnings and hours, are given in index number form from October 1947 in Table 85 of "British Labour Statistics: Historical Abstract 1886–1968". Similar pairs of index numbers for earlier periods are not available. Figures for 1969–72 are given in Table 39 of "British Labour Statistics: Year Book 1972".

Subsequent figures are as follows:

INDICES OF EARNINGS AND COMPARABLE WAGE RATES: FULL-TIME MANUAL WORKERS IN INDUSTRIES COVERED
(Average 1956=100)
Average weekly earnings Basic weekly wage rates
1973 October 354.7 284.3
1974 October 425.5 342.7
