HC Deb 04 July 1975 vol 894 cc585-6W
Mr. Biffen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what assessment has been made of the ability of the United Kingdom dairy industry to supply the liquid milk market during the next 12 months; and if he will list the legal constraints which prevent the importation of liquid milk from France, Eire or Holland should there be a shortfall of home supplies.

Mr. Bishop

The United Kingdom is self-sufficient in milk for liquid consumption. Although actual production depends on weather and other factors there is no reason to expect any shortage of milk for the liquid market which is given first priority by the industry.

The legislation listed below contains provisions relating to trade in liquid milk:

  • Importation of Carcases and Animal Products Order 1972.
  • Milk and Dairies (General) Regulations, 1959.
  • Milk (Special Designations) Regulations, 1963.
  • Public Health (Imported Milk) Regulations, 1926.
  • Milk Act (Northern Ireland), 1950 as amended.
  • Milk (Special Designations) (Scotland) Order 1965.
