§ Mr. Crouchasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the extent of water shortage in the Canterbury area which has led to the decision to build a reservoir at Broad Oak; and whether, in view of the cost of more than £10 million, he will ask the authority to review the project.
§ Mr. Denis HowellI understand that the Broad Oak reservoir is required to serve not only Canterbury but a wide area of north-cast Kent where existing supply problems are likely to become acute by 1980 despite alleviation by continuing development of small sources. The Southern Water Authority and the Mid-Kent Water Company, which are 569W jointly proposing the reservoir, will review the proposal in the light of local consultations which are at present taking place. If, subsequently, application for an order is submitted to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State and objections are received the proposal will be the subject of a public local inquiry.
