HC Deb 19 December 1975 vol 902 cc886-7W
Mr. George Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the total cost paid in allowances for members of the Foreign Service serving overseas in the most recent three years.

Mr. Ennals

The total sums paid in allowances to members of the Diplomatic Service serving overseas in the last three years were:

1972–73 £10.1 million
1973–74 £11.8 million
1974–75 £12.4 million

Mr. Welsh

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many persons in his Department receive educational allowances in respect of their children; and what is the total sum involved.

Mr. Ennals

At the beginning of the school term just ending 1,103 members of the Diplomatic Service were in receipt of boarding school allowance in respect of children attending boarding schools in the United Kingdom.

The total amount of boarding school allowance paid in 1974–75, the last financial year for which figures are available on an annual basis, was £2,025,875.

Some financial assistance, within prescribed limits, is given where necessary towards day school fees for some children who accompany their parents abroad. The total amount of this assistance is not readily available since the number of such children is not recorded centrally.
