HC Deb 15 December 1975 vol 902 cc444-5W
Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from chief constables of police in England regarding the number of authorities which compel married serving police officers to live in a police house and do not allow them to provide their own house; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Summerskill

In the light of a recommendation by the Police Advisory Board in 1970 police authorities were asked to reduce as far as practicable the restrictions on house ownership by police officers. Since then authorities have kept the matter under regular review in the light of local conditions and in consultation with the police representative associations. We know of no ground for thinking that we should call for a special report from chief constables.
