§ M. Wigleyasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many civil servants in his Department are employed in Scotland; and how many in England.
§ Mr. William RossOf the 7,961 non-industrial and industrial staff in post in the Scottish Office on 1st November 1975, 69 were employed at Dover House, Whitehall. The rest were employed in Scotland. In addition there were 2,607 staff in post in the Scottish Prison Service and the State Hospital, Carstairs, on 1st November, all employed in Scotland.
§ Mr. Michael Lathamasked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what legislative or policy factors he attributes the increase in non-industrial staff in his Department from 9,617 on 1st July 1975 to 9,796 on 1st October.
§ Mr. William RossAbout one-quarter of the increase of 179 is attributable to improvement in Prison Service recruitment. 20 staff were transferred from other Departments with no net increase in Civil Service manpower; and the rest arise from improved recruitment, within the provision of the Supply Estimates, for a wide range of duties in many different areas of my Departments' responsibilities.
