HC Deb 15 December 1975 vol 902 cc484-5W
Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what plans she has for introducing a system of maximum prices for a wide range of consumer goods; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Maclennan

Maximum prices and retail margins of bread, butter, cheese, tea and flour are now controlled under the Prices Acts 1974 and 1975. The price of milk is also subject to statutory control. My right hon. Friend has no plans to introduce maximum prices on any further goods. However, she hopes to obtain the agreement of industry to restrain prices voluntarily on a wide range of consumer goods within a 5 per cent. limit over a period of six months, starting early in the New Year.
