HC Deb 11 December 1975 vol 902 cc298-9W
20. Sir J. Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether it is the policy of Her Majesty's Government that the United Kingdom should so far as is possible produce food from its own resources; to what extent this is now being done; and to what extent he expects it to be done as a percentage of consumption in future years.

28. Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what proportion of our food supplies in 1975 was accounted for by home production; and what was the equivalent figure in 1974.

Mr. Peart

Home agriculture and fisheries contributed 55 per cent. of the United Kingdom's total food requirements in 1973–74, the latest year for which aggregate figures are available. The Government set out in "Food from our own Resources" their strategy for agricultural production in the years ahead.

27. Mr. James

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is the level of agricultural output in the current year compared with last year.

Mr. Peart

Gross output of United Kingdom agriculture at current prices is expected to show a further increase this year, but I would ask the hon. Member to await the results of the annual review which is now taking place.
