HC Deb 05 December 1975 vol 901 c366W
Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list the ports in the United Kingdom which are used for the loading or unloading of vessels and which are connected to the sea by river or canal.

Mr. Booth

The best estimate available is that at least 600 places on the sea or rivers and canals might be defined as ports for the purpose of the Dock-workers (Regulation of Employment) Act 1946. A very large number of these are not in active use, or could be used only by very small craft, or are used only by fishing vessels.

Mr. Viggers

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will place in the Library a map showing areas which are within five miles of the mean high water mark of ports which are used for the loading or unloading of vessels and which are connected to the sea by river or canal.

Mr. Booth

The information is not readily available and a map could only be prepared at a disproportionate cost.
