HC Deb 05 December 1975 vol 901 cc356-7W
Mr. Peter Rees

asked the Minister of State for the Civil Service Department if he will give in respect of the employees of each Department of Government the information on salaries as required of company directors of civil companies by Section 8(1) of the Companies Act 1967.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

The total number of home civil servants, at 1st April 1975, in receipt of a national salary rate of £12,000 or more, per annum was as follows:

Salary Bands Numbers of staff
£12,000–£12,500 577
£12,501–£15,000 206
£15,001–£17,500 28
£17,501–£20,000 23
£20,001–£22,500 3

In addition there are 2,962 home civil servants in grades paid on scales with a national minimum below £10,000 and a maximum between £10,000–£11,999 but the numbers actually receiving more than £10,000 cannot be identified without disproportionate cost. It is not possible to provide a breakdown of these figures by Departments in the time available but I will write to the hon. and learned Member when this information comes to hand.

Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what is the current total annual salary and wage bill for civil servants, and apart from the General Post Office what was the total in 1964: what is the percentage increase between the two dates; and what are the percentage increases in the cost of living and the national average wage, respectively, between the same dates.

Mr. Charles R. Morris

The current total annual salary and wages bill to civil servants is £2,252 million, compared with £668 million in 1964, a percentage increase of 237 per cent. between the two dates. Because the size of the Civil Service has increased during the period the rise in the average earnings of civil servants has been only 196 per cent. The percentage increases in the cost of living and the national average wage between the two dates were 153 per cent. and 239 per cent. respectively.
