HC Deb 04 December 1975 vol 901 c721W
Mrs. Winifred Ewing

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will make a statement on his proposals following the meeting of the North-East Atlantic

North Sea Herring North Sea Cod North Sea Haddock Metric ton North Sea Whiting
United Kingdom 5,300 84,000 79,500 44,000
Denmark (including Faroes) 28,003 44,500 41,250 74,000
Iceland 5,000 Nil Nil Nil

The North Sea herring quota is for the first six months of 1976. The other quotas are for calendar year 1976.

The West of Scotland herring quota arrangements, in which the United Kingdom share is 70,000 out of 136,000 tons in 1976, remain unchanged. Maximum catch limits were also agreed for sprats. The utilisation of United Kingdom quotas within the British fishing industry will be discussed with its representatives. Quotas are determined by negotiation on the basis of such factors as historic catches, current needs, and coastal state preferences rather than by calculation.
