Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the current grant to the British Youth Council; and what it was in each of the last five years, respectively.

Mr. Ennals

The grant to the British Youth Council from public funds during the current financial year is £15,000. During the previous five years it was:

1974–75 £15,000
1973–74 £10,500
1972–73 £6,000+£ 15,000 special grant towards the organisation of the World Assembly of Youth General Assembly.
1971–72 £5,000
1970–71 £8,825.

Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what percentage of the total budget of the British Youth Council came from Government funds.

About 87 per cent. in 1974–75.

Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the proposed grant for the British Youth Council for the years 1976–77 and 1977–78.

Mr. Ennals

Her Majesty's Government envisage a grant of £9,000 during 1976–77. No decision has yet been taken on grants beyond that.

Mr. Steen

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs

if he will make a statement about the rôle and future of the British Youth Council.

Mr. Ennals

The British Youth Council is an autonomous body and makes its own policy. Its aims are to encourage young people from all sections of the community to take an active interest in international affairs.
