§ Mr. MeacherThe Government are deeply concerned about reports that the British Steel Corporation is contemplating drastic cuts in manpower of up to 20,000 workers over the next few months. The corporation has commenced talks with the unions about possible reductions in manpower as a result of the present low level of demand for steel, and has kept my officials informed. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State and my right hon. and noble Friend the Minister of State will be discussing the position with the chairman of the corporation today.
