The Prime Minister

I informed my hon. Friend the Member for Liverpool, Walton (Mr. Heffer) that, in view of his action in speaking in the debate on the European Community on 9th April, in breach of a Cabinet decision that Ministers unable to support the Government's motion should not speak in the debate, he could no longer remain a member of the Government.

Q14. Mr. Cryer

asked the Prime Minister what explanation he gives to Ministers on their appointment about their rights under law in the event of dismissal.

The Prime Minister

Ministers are not Crown employees but holders of office under the Crown and they may be dismissed at the Crown's pleasure. Following their appointment, Ministers' entitlements under the Parliamentary and other Pensions Act 1972 are drawn to their attention.
