HC Deb 29 November 1974 vol 882 cc266-7W
Mr. Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will make a statement about the school building programme in Cheshire with special reference to the new primary school to serve the village of Rainow, and the new Whirley Road Primary School, Macclesfield.

Mr. Armstrong

Cheshire has a lump sum allocation of £4,745,000 for major building projects to meet basic need in the 1974–75 building year. The authority has indicated that part of this amount will be used to build the new 280-place County Primary School in Whirley Road, Macclesfield, which was deferred from 1973–74 because of site difficulties.

A project to replace the existing Rainow Church of England Aided and Rainow Methodist Aided Primary Schools by a new primary school in Rainow was deferred under the terms of Circular 15/73. Moreover this project was not eligible for the limited 1974–75 replacement programme which my right hon. Friend considered it right to restrict to projects of benefit to pupils living in areas of special need.
