Mr. James Johnson

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many foreign trawlers have been caught by fishery protection vessels in the last 12 months poaching in British waters; if he will state to the last convenient date their nationality and numbers, respectively; and what has been the total amount paid in fines.

Mr. Strang

Two French vessels and one Bulgarian have been convicted for illegal fishing in the British waters in the last 12 months, and in addition to fines totalling £825, gear valued at £7,975 was confiscated. A further seven vessels were convicted for offences related to the stowage of gear.
