HC Deb 28 November 1974 vol 882 cc247-8W
Mr. Tomlinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has reviewed the advice by his Department on driving in fog.

Mr. Mulley

In accordance with my statement of 20th May, I have reviewed the Fog Code and publicity on this subject. I decided, in order to improve the code's impact and effectiveness, to concentrate on the three most important points: "slow down; keep a safe distance; use headlights". The tendency to drive too fast in fog is now well known, and the importance of these three points cannot be over-stressed. A two-weeks' publicity campaign in the national Press emphasising these points was mounted at the beginning of November and supported by a national distribution of leaflets. Posters will also be displayed in motorway service areas during December and January.
