HC Deb 27 November 1974 vol 882 cc184-5W
Mrs. Knight

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his estimate of the total number of new immigrants expected to reach the United Kingdom from India and Bangladesh in 1975, 1976 and 1977.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

It has never been the practice to give estimates of future immigration since any estimate may well be falsified by subsequent changes in a wide variety of factors. Since the number of dependants who have the right to enter this country is determined by the Immigration Rules, any increase in the rate reduces more rapidly the size of the pool of those who are entitled to come, just as reduction in the rate reduces it more slowly.
