asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the current policy of his Department on the question of costs incurred by successful third party objectors at public inquiries.

In accordance with the recommendations of the Council on Tribunals in its report on the Award of Costs at Statutory Inquiries (Cmnd. 2471) third parties are expected to bear their own costs irrespective of the outcome of the inquiry.
