HC Deb 26 November 1974 vol 882 cc151-2W
Mr. Nicholas Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the average annual benefit to house mortgagors claiming tax relief on mortgages; and what was the average annual cost to taxpayers and ratepayers of each local authority dwelling, in the latest year for which the figures are available.

Mr. Freeson

On the basis of the latest available information, the relevant figures for England and Wales in 1973–74 are as follows:

  1. (i) Average subsidy, from the Exchequer and from rate fund contributions, for a council house, £89.30.
  2. (ii) Average tax relief or option mortgage subsidy per mortgagor, £101.50.
