HC Deb 22 November 1974 vol 881 c552W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many new bathroom suites have been installed in Speaker's House, Stormont; what is the total cost involved; how much has been realised from the sale of the existing fittings which have been replaced; and why new bathroom suites were necessary for the refurbishment of the building.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The house will provide residential and office accommodation for Northern Ireland Office Ministers and their staffs.

Six new bathroom suites and three shower compartments have been installed in Stormont House. The total cost, including the cost of extensive plumbing and building works, has been £4,500. All original fittings which were serviceable have been either reused or taken into store. Fittings which were obsolete or damaged were worthless and disposed of as waste. New bathroom suites were necessary in order to replace certain obsolete facilities and to provide for the increased number of occupants.

Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what was the cost of the new iron spiral staircase installed in Speaker's House, Stormont; where it was made; and why it was necessary.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The cost of the new spiral staircase installed in Stormont House was £614. It was manufactured in England. The staircase was necessary, to conform with Building Regulations, as a secondary means of escape from the top floor bedrooms in case of fire.
